Car Building Rules:
1. Ground Rules
A. This race is open to all scouts registered in Pack 87.
B. Cars must have been built for this race. Cars built for a previous derby are not permitted Scouts may enter more than 1 car, provided they were all built for this year’s race.
C. The scout entering the car must have participated in both the design and construction. Parents are permitted and encouraged to help, but every effort should be made to have the scout do as much as they are capable of. In other words, "Do Your Best".
2. Measurements
A. Overall width, including wheels, shall not exceed 2¾”.
B. Minimum width between wheels shall be 1¾”.
C. Overall length, including wheels and any attachments shall not exceed 7”.
D. There is no restriction on wheelbase. (The distance between front and rear wheels)
E. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. The reading of the official race scale will be final. The car may be built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal, provided it is securely built into the body or firmly attached to it. No loose materials are permitted.
3. Appearance
A. The car shall be painted. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.
B. Details such as steering wheels, windshields, drivers, spoilers, fenders, etc., are permitted and may be made of any material. Such details must be firmly attached to the car and may not exceed the measurement rules.
C. Numbers are optional. All cars will receive an official number at registration. This may be a different number than the decorative number
4. Wheels and Axles
A. Approved wheels and axles are included in the kits supplied by the pack. Other wheels may be used only if they have the “Official BSA” or “CMI” marking molded into them. (CMI is a long standing supplier to BSA). Please pay attention to this rule! It has been the largest reason for cars being disqualified in past years.
B. Wheels and axles may be modified.
C. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are not permitted.
D. The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
E. The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devise or other propulsion.
F. Only dry lubricants, such as graphite or Teflon, may be used.
